I live abroad and own something
in Pakistan that earns money

A house that is rented out, a plot that was sold, money sent home. Each of these can be taxed in Pakistan even though you live elsewhere, and each is treated differently. This page names the questions, so that you can put them to an adviser.

Where this applies This page covers tax in Pakistan on income and property there. What the country you live in taxes is a separate question, and the two can overlap.

What this is about

Whether you count as resident in Pakistan for tax depends on how much of the year you spend there, and it changes what is taxed. Rent from property in Pakistan is generally taxed there. A sale of property can be taxed there. Money you send home is treated differently from money earned there.

The practical problem is that tax is often taken at source, by the tenant or at the registry, and the owner abroad never sees it or never claims what could be claimed back.

What has to be in place

What has to be clear.

  1. Where you spent the year, and for how long in Pakistan.

  2. What you own in Pakistan and what it earns.

  3. Whether you are registered, and whether returns have been filed.

Note Your advocate confirms which of these apply to your case.

The documents you will be asked for

What an adviser asks for.

  • Your tax number, or your identity card number.
  • Rent agreements and records of rent received.
  • Sale deeds and the tax paid at the registry.
  • Bank records of money sent to Pakistan.

How an advocate helps from where you are

What an advocate, with an accountant, does.

  • Settles whether you are resident or not, and what follows from it.
  • Registers you and files the returns that are due.
  • Claims back what was taken at source and should not have been.

What to ask before you agree

  • Am I resident or not for this year, and what follows from that?
  • What has been taken at source, and can any of it be claimed back?
  • Are returns due, and will you file them?
  • What do you need from me, and by when?
  • What is your fee, and what is not included in it?
