We would rather settle
than fight
Most disputes between relatives about land or money are never really about law. They are about who said what and who is owed respect. A settlement can end them faster than any court, if it is written so that it holds. This page is about that.
Where this applies This page covers disputes about something in Pakistan. What your religion or community practises for settling disputes is not something we write about.
What this is about
Pakistan has a law on alternative dispute resolution that provides for mediation, conciliation and arbitration, and courts can refer a civil dispute to it. Outside the courts, a settlement is simply an agreement, and it is only as strong as the paper it is written on.
The mistake people make is to settle by word of mouth, with an elder in the room, and to find that the other side remembers it differently a year later. The elder can still be in the room. The paper is what changes.
