A relative says the land was “given” to them by word of mouth years ago. A recent decision of the Lahore High Court sets out what such a claim now has to prove.

The person claiming the gift has to show the offer, the acceptance and the handing over, with witnesses, and explain why nothing was written down.

Why it matters to families abroad

Most of these claims are made against heirs who were not in the country. The decision makes the claim harder to run on words alone.
