A plot in a housing society,
or a file that went nowhere
A plot in a housing society is bought as a file long before it is a plot. The file is a promise: pay the instalments, and the society will hand over a plot with a number and a possession letter. When the promise stalls, the owner abroad is the last to hear. This page is about what to check and what can be done.

What this is about
The file is a right against the society, not a title to land. It becomes land when the society allots a numbered plot, the charges are paid, and possession is handed over. Until then, what you hold is the society’s own paperwork.
The common problems are a society that was never approved, a file that has been transferred twice, charges that keep coming, and possession that never arrives. Each has a different answer, and the first step for all of them is the same: read what the society actually holds in your name.
